Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) for Airborne Pollutants

Department of Labour (DOL) Department of Minerals and Energy (DME)

Regulations for Hazardous Chemical
 Substances, 1995 - Annexure 1

OELs for Airborne Pollutants
Schedule 22.9(2)(a)
Amendment to the Regulations in Respect
of Occupational Hygiene, October 2006

Control Limits (Table 1): A - Z

Exposure to a substance demarcated with an asterix (*) must be kept as far below the OEL as is reasonably practicable.

Recommended Limits (Table 2):

A - B   C - C   D - D   E - E   F - L   M - M

   N - O   P - P   Q - S   T - T   U - Z

OELs:

A - B   C - C   D - D   E - E   F - L   M - M

N - O   P - P   Q - S   T - T   U - Z

Notes

bullet At the top of each OEL page the link to the asosh.org SiteSearch page and its Mirror are included to provide quick access to analytical methods, MSDS and other chemical information
(See the Examples page and Flash Demo).
bullet Ceiling values are not listed by DOL
bullet For practical reasons in monitoring, OEL-STEL values may be used as OEL C values for use underground.
bullet A number of errors exist in the 1995 DOL listing of OELs due to duplication of chemicals under different names. As an example over 30% of the Control Limits are also listed under other names in the Recommended Limits section.
bullet A limited number of OELs are based on static air sampling rather than personal sampling. These include the 8 hour OEL for cotton dust and the annual average OEL for vinyl chloride.
bullet Tabulation shows inhalable particulates unless indicated to be respirable.
Size selector to use the Johannesburg criteria for "Respirable dust" with an efficiency of:
bullet 100 % particles of 1 micron aerodynamic diameter
bullet 50 % particles of 5 micron aerodynamic diameter
bullet 20 % particles of 6 micron aerodynamic diameter
bullet 0 % of particles of 7 micron aerodynamic diameter
and larger to pass through the size selector
The concentration of "respirable particulate" shall be determined from the fraction passing a size selector with an efficiency of:
bullet 100% particles of 0 micron aerodynamic diameter
bullet 50% particles of 4 micron aerodynamic diameter
bullet 30% particles of 5 micron aerodynamic diameter
bullet 1% particles of 10 micron aerodynamic diameter
